In a livestream held by SEGA earlier today, we finally got new details announced for Project Sekai, a new mobile game in development from Colorful Palette, a new sub-studio by Craft Egg, which developed the highly-successful mobile game BanG Dream! A new official website along with a new main visual was also launched.

Project Sekai: Colorful Stage Main Visual

Offical Site: https://pjsekai.sega.jp/

Titled “Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku”, the rhytm/band game is essentially a clone of BanG Dream!, but with a different story and tweaks to include Crypton Future Media’s Piapro Characters (Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, Megurine Luka, Meiko and Kaito).

One of the game’s protagonists, named Ichika Hoshino, lives in real-world modern Japan, where virtual singers exist only as virtual, just like our own real world. She somehow comes across a new world called “Sekai”, which was born from ideas. These ideas/worlds are also where Vocaloid songs were born from.

Depending on the world/thoughts, the characters can take on different appearances. The goal of each world is to discover the “name/meaning” of the songs, and work together with the Vocaloid of that world to sing the songs. This allows the song to become realized into the real world. 5 sekai worlds are planned: Band, Idol, Street, Musical and Underground.

The gameplay features original 3DPVs for each song (with an optional 2D background if you find it too distracting), and conversations between characters in a Live2D style. Hatsune Miku’s character will be voiced by Fujita Saki, with her voice tuned to sound more Miku-ish.

You will be able to freely choose between Project Sekai versions (covers) of Vocaloid songs, or the original versions of the songs while playing the game. If you choose the original songs, they will be performed by the Virtual Singers. If you choose the Sekai version, one or more of the virtual singers for that song will join the original characters.

There will be various outfits the characters can wear, and 5 levels of difficulty to appease even the greatest masters of mobile rhythm games.

Six songs have been announced for the game so far, with more to be added later. These are:

– Just be Friends by Dixie Flatline
– Sweet Magic by Junky
– Viva Happy by Mitchie M
– Miracle Paint by OSTER project
– Rettou Joutou by Reol/Giga
– Roki by MikitoP

In addition to the songs, various producers have also been announced for producing content for the game: DECO*27, Mitchie M, Giga, PinocchioP, and Mafumafu are the first to be confirmed. Mitchie M and Giga are also working together on the game’s first theme song.

At the recent Hatsune Miku: Magical Mirai 2019 in Tokyo, Crypton Future Media’s Wataru Sasaki (head of Crypton Future Media’s Piapro Character development) announced in a talk session some details regarding Hatsune Miku and the other Piapro Character vocal synth software development from this point moving forward.

Simply put, Crypton Future Media will be moving Hatsune Miku and their other characters away from Yamaha’s VOCALOID engine. This is arguably the biggest change to happen to Hatsune Miku’s software since her initial release in 2007, so there’s understandably quite a few fans that might be confused as to what this means, and might even be worried. So here’s a rundown of what the known changes are, and what they will mean for Vocaloid fans as consumers, and Vocaloid music creators.

– Hatsune Miku’s voicebank, along with Crypton’s other character voicebanks, will become less tied to Yamaha’s VOCALOID engine.
– There will be no updates utilizing Yamaha’s VOCALOID 5 engine.
– A new engine/product for the characters was developed using in-house algorithms by Crypton Future Media.
– This new engine has been in development for 2 years.
– The ‘identity’ of the voices are planned to remain the same with the new engine.
– This new product is aimed to be compatible with existing tools.
– The new product is currently not named.
– 11 new effector VSTs will be included in the new product. These include Cherry Pie, HS Booster, Vocal Drive and more.
– Patches/updates to the voicebanks themselves will now be possible.
– The new product will be released as a new series along with the next generation Piapro Studio in 1H 2020.
– Relationships with Yamaha will continue going forward (vocal synth promotion, and other partnerships).
– More info on this change is expected later this year.

What does this mean for Hatsune Miku and Cryptonloid fans as listeners? Possibly not too much, since this move aims to keep Miku sounding mostly as she currently does, while adding more functionality and enhancing the tools available to the music producers. And for the producers, this translates to more options and flexibility in production, and possibly even a lower product price since there wont be a royalty fee paid to Yamaha in future product iterations.

These changes allow Crypton more flexibility in in the updates and add-ons to their software, which creates more exciting possibilities in the future for everyone! For further details, we will have to wait for more in-depth announcements from Crypton Future Media and Yamaha later this year.
