This year was the year of Hatsune Miku’s 4th Magical Mirai event, but it was the first time I attended one in person. Yep, despite the “event of all Miku events” taking place every year since 2013, I had never been to one before. After kicking myself over it for the past 3 years, I finally had the opportunity to go to Magical Mirai 2016, and I couldn’t be happier.

Hatsune Miku: Magical Mirai can be considered the true “Miku Expo”, and features an exhibition and concert events over the course of several days. It embodies and showcases the Hatsune Miku culture in ways that can’t really be experienced anywhere else. It truly is the event for Hatsune Miku fans to see.

I took some photos during my visit, and hope you enjoy them! Photos, however, just can’t give the same feeling of actually being there. If you’ve even considered it, I say go for it! Next year is also Hatsune Miku’s 10th anniversary, so we can only imagine what they will have in store.

If you’re attending this year’s Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai in Japan this September like we are, you may have observed that the Japanese version of the site has received many updates, but the other languages have been neglected. One of these missing important details is an English layout map of the Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall.

A recent tweet from @Kowhey_Panzer39 fixes this problem, thank you very much! Click the image below for the full size.

In today’s world, the vocaloid culture is ever expanding, and gathering support from more creators and fans from around the globe. Yet despite this, we can’t help but feel that fans outside of Japan are often overlooked by creators and fans within Japan. Many producers I’ve spoken with have also been surprised by Vocaloid’s popularity overseas.

So with this feeling of isolation and disconnection with fans in Japan, it’s great to know that a group of fans have come together to form an event called “VOCACON“, which focuses on sharing the creations of the Vocaloid culture from around the world, finally giving fans within Japan a sense of the culture’s global scale.

I was able to speak with Yukky, one of VOCACON’s executive members, to learn more about some of Vocacon’s events from the convention held in February of this year. Continue reading »
